Lyon to Marseille via The Bald Mountain
It’s not begging if it’s for a cause you are passionate about and if you really feel you’ve deserved the request…
Many of you know I (we) (Lee and I) (Fungi FD) (My Brother) are involved in this and many of you have kindly expressed an interest in supporting and finding out why…
In just 6 days we embark on a challenge like no other. We will join 40 other like minded people to ride from Lyon to Marseille a distance of just over 606km, we’ll luckily get a few days to do this but the distance doesn’t really tell the whole story…. The Climbs this one is about the climbs!!!
If day one and day two are monsters then day 3 is absolutely brutal ! Mont Verntoux, The Bald Mountain, 1909 meters of very steep climbing on what will no doubt be very tired legs from the previous 2 days.
All Macmillan Jersey fundraisers and challenges are amazing and crucial for the running of the charity, this one more so than most.. Covid-19 has been devastating for the charities income, The charity sector was hit as hard as our friends in the events industry and we know first hand how bad this was.
This challenge was originally meant to take place during 2020 and was a ride through the Tuscan hills. Postponed twice and almost cancelled, action had to be taken to progress to allow the charity to move forward and be allowed to use the desperately needed funds already fundraised by the riders of 2020.
We’ve all agreed and embraced the change of venue and ride but this one is Hard. It’s much harder than most, we’re expecting or had trained for. This will be a challenge in the very sense of the word, but it’s not a race and although we ride as individuals we are a team and no one will be left behind.
So Why? Lee and I started cycling to find headspace and spend time away from work together. It worked and we’ve ridden a few times on challenges and always for our beloved Macmillan Jersey
We at Fungi have been aligned with Macmillan Jersey for years now, We’re lucky enough to support them through many ways including the honour of sponsoring the catering needs of their café book shop The Lounge. They are such a pleasure to deal with and to support, I’ll need them one day, we all will and at that time I will do in the absolute assurance that I have already given back for the lifeline services that they provide.
But for now they are my mental health! Covid-19 has been catastrophic for our family business, We’ve worked throughout it all, We were front line when we were all unsure of the consequences of what we were walking into. We never refused a delivery, we diversified to home address not for financial gain but because there was a service that needed to be provided.
The stress of it all, the pressure, the expectations and the needs of our many staff have left me broken on many occasions over the past 18 months. We work from home and we all live together in our little shire like the Waltons…. The release of cycling has been imperative to me. No matter how hard the days have been at Fungi there has always been a Macmillan Jersey rider on the end of a WhatsApp message ready and willing to ride in the knowledge that just being there is the support I needed. Their support though Covid-19 has been absolute and I cant wait to ride this challenge with them.
We’ve paid for this, We didn’t go down the fundraising route Lee and I have covered all of our costs already and have been delighted to do so. But if you would like to show your support and follow our journey then please click the link. 100% of your donation goes directly to Macmillan Jersey but your thought will quite literally power us up a mountain.
For every late delivery that I never questioned, for every time I loaned a van and refused payment, for every time you received a cheeky extra in your order from me and for every time I did you a favour…. Then consider this a big green bucket and please chuck a tenner in!!!
