Lyon à Marseille, via Ventoux
The ‘C’ Word
Not the sweary one and not the pandemic one. The one that, unfortunately, has been overshadowed over the past 2 years; Cancer. We need to talk about it…
Today, 1 September, is quite an auspicious day to have that conversation as it marks 11 years since my Dad passed away from Throat Cancer, some 9 months after his initial diagnosis.
There’s been a huge amount of reflection over the past 11 years and a huge amount of gratitude for the love that Dad poured into our lives. There has also been a significant amount of love shown to the wonderful Team at Macmillan Cancer Support Jersey for their unwavering care, support and guidance throughout those 9 months.
At the end of this month I will be heading, along with 50 other cyclists, down to Marseille where we’ll start our journey towards Lyon. A trip of 500km in 5 days. The trip has been cancelled on 3 separate occasions and we are now headed to France, as opposed to our original destination of Italy.
One outcome from these cancellations is that there is a huge hole in the fundraising which has been directed to Macmillan and I’m asking for your support in trying to plug some of that gap. If you are able to spare a couple of pounds please do so at…
The trip has been entirely funded by myself, therefore any monies raised or donated will go directly to Macmillan.
In closing, I’ll leave you with a little taster of the challenge that awaits on Day 4!
Mont Ventoux (1912m), known for equally good reasons as the ‘giant of Provence’ and ‘windy mountain,’ is one of the most famous climbs in Tour de France history. Its reputation as one of the toughest climbs in the sport is well- founded; the wind and heat on the barren, exposed upper slopes add to the relentlessness of the climb.
While Ventoux is undisputedly the main challenge, there is little flat along the whole route, and it’s the landscapes and variety that round out the experience. You will reach Marseille with an unforgettable sense of achievement!
