Walking the Camino De Santiago for Macmillan Jersey
My name is Manju and I have been volunteering as a yoga instructor at Macmillan Jersey for over 5 years now.
Around 6 years ago, maybe more, before I went to bed I watched a film about a walk called The Camino de Santiago. When I woke up the next morning my wife asked me if I was ok because I had kept her awake moving my legs very fast all through the night and she thought maybe I had trapped a nerve. I told her that I had been dreaming that I was walking The Camino de Santiago and that one day I would definitely do it for real.
Since then I have thought about that walk a lot so this year for my 50th birthday I am taking some time out and doing it.
I was born in India so before watching this film I had not heard of The Camino. If you also do not know, it is a network of pilgrimage routes starting in many different European counties all leading to one point, the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain. Pilgrims started walking these routes from 812 AD so many have walked the path before me! I will walk The Camino Francés or French Way from St. Jean-Pied-du-Port in France all the way across Spain to Santiago. The walk will take between 33 to 35 days to complete and I will be carrying all my supplies with me for the duration. For me personally, this walk will be a huge challenge.
Because this year Jersey will have been my permanent home for 10 years I want to give something back to the local community. A small way I can do this is to ask for sponsorship for Macmillan Jersey because I know from teaching yoga at Macmillan that this journey is a small challenge compared to the many challenges the people that Macmillan supports face. I am sure that there will be days when I will really struggle on this walk and it is on those days in particular that I will remember all my Macmillan yoga students and those thoughts will inspire me to continue.
I would be very grateful if you would consider helping me reach my sponsorship target so Macmillan Jersey can continue to provide all their amazing services to people living in Jersey.
